Plastic bags are destroying our environment.  Even biodegradable plastics degrade very slowly with proper conditions such as exposure to sunlight, oxygen, water, etc.  The degradation process of biodegradable plastic releases CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide) which is considered as a GHG (Green House Gas) and contributes to global warming.
